2 days in Provence - what to see

I will be spending 2 days in Provence first week of May (I know that is not enough time, but it%26#39;s what I have on this trip) before heading to NIce on 3rd day for overnight train to Italy. I will be based in Avignon. What towns should I see? I am thinking of doing the Van Gogh walk in St Remy, also really love wine. Is Orange worth it? Suggestions?

With only two days in the area, I don%26#39;t know that I would make the trip to Orange. Cote du Luberon wines are wondeful! If you%26#39;re in St. Remy one day, then the towns I would visit on your other day would be L%26#39;Isle sur la Sorgue, Gordes, Roussillon, Menerbes, and Bonnieux.

Enjoy! You%26#39;ll want to return to the Luberon/Vaucluse area and spend much more time than 2 days!

Hi happytravels. I am trying to figure out the best way to get from Provence to Milan or Florence - fly/train/drive Where did you find details of the trains between France and Italy? Thanks.

Will you have a car when you are in Avignon? If you are using trains and/or buses to get around there are places you will not be able to get to, including the Lubéron villages, unless you take an organized tour.

There are a number of places you can reach easily by train and/or bus that I think would be preferable to Orange.

Milan and Florence are a long way apart. Travelling by train from Avignon you can reach Milan in ~8 hours. Avignon to Florence is an 11-13 hour trip. The only direct train from Nice to Florence is the night train. There are no direct trains from Avignon to either city.

It would take considerably less time to drive under normal traffic conditions, especially to Florence. However, you would probably have to pay a hefty drop off fee if you rent a car in France and return it in Italy. You could always take a train to the closest place with good rental options in Italy and then continue by car. (Savona? San Remo?)

Other than Air France or Alitalia there are AFAIK few if any options to get from the major airports in the region —‚ Marseille or Nice — to Milan or Florence. You might try flying to Rome and then taking a train to Florence. Also check for flights to Pisa but I don%26#39;t hold out much hope there either.

Try www.bahn.de and www.voyages-sncf.com for train timetables. (The German site is easier to navigate but will not give you fares.

Look at viamichelin.com for driving times, routes and toll and fuel costs. Note that time estimates do not include stops and that the routes through Provence and along the coast can get clogged with very heavy traffic in July and August.

www.whichbudget.com will allow you to investigate budget air options.

Good luck!

2 days is too short. You should go to the beaux, its had great history and a 1 star restaurant you can enjoy spectacular views of provence. St remy is great for shoping. If you have time go to Gordes, is amazing, try Murs, or Joucas and get really into Peter M%26#39;s 1 year in Provence mood. Best luck

Yes, we will have a car, so open to options.

I found the overnight train from Nice to Florence on the sncf.com website, They also have a few trips during the day. I found it difficult to book what I wanted, so I followed IrishRovr%26#39;s suggestion and used MorganB%26#39;s tips, and called their english desk. They were very helpful.

Hope this helps.

I will be driving from St Remy provence to Savona in July August. I am mindful of the traffic. Could anyone suggest a good route or somewhere scenic to stop enroute? Thanks
