Newbies to the Area

We are travelling to Sylvamar this August with our 4 and 6 year old daughters. Last year we went to the Vendee and had a great time, the site was really relaxed. We have read reviews that say the site owner at Sylvamar adhers to the rules strictly. Does this mean i need to dig out the speedos instead of swimming shorts??. God help the other campers if I do!.

Are there any %26quot;must see or do%26quot; near the area, say within an hours drive?

Ta in anticipation

We were in Sylvamar last year, and also go back in August. It is really good. Hopefully the weather will be a bit better this year!

Yep, the lifeguards do enforce the dreaded %26quot;SPEEDO%26quot; rule, but the pool is fantastically clean as there is no dirt bought into it from %26quot;beach shorts%26quot;. My husband got some of those speedos that look like M%26amp;S tight boxers, not nearly so hideous as the traditional ones (that the Germans all seem to love SO much!), so keep your eyes open for them. To be honest, once you%26#39;ve been there a few days you stop laughing at all the fine specimens in their pants!

We took a funicular railway into the Pyrenees mountains - that was about an hour away - and was really worth the queue to get on the train. From the top you could see about 5 different countries (apparently) although I have no idea what they were! The kids club was good for my 6 and 8 year old, but they have informed me that they want to miss it this year as they were split apart because of the ages - I think that your 2 would be together though. The fete de Bayonne is on in early August (when we are there), this is meant to be fun. When the fete isn%26#39;t on Bayonne is gorgeous anyway, medeival and scenic. St Jean de Luz is gorgeaous and so is San Sebastian. I would avoid Biarritz, expensive to park, expensive to shop and very expensive to surf. The beach at Labenne is fab, sandy, windy and BIG waves - keep an eye on the kids!

The staff at the site are fantastic, kind and obviously enjoy working with the children. We gave them all our left over food (rice, pasta etc) when we came home, and some euros (as they earn a pittance) and it was like Christmas day! Evening entertainment is fine, after a few glasses of wine it is even funny!

Hope that this helps.

Anything else, let me know and I%26#39;ll do my best!

Enjoy yourself.

Thanks for the post.................its a good job i went out and bought some %26quot;budgie smuggler%26quot; swimming shorts this weekend then isnt it? I had a nasty suspicion that the lifeguards were going to be quite vigilant. Still, if it means that the pool stays clean, thats great!

My girls love the pool and the beach so by the sounds of it they should be well catered for and if you are going back a second time with your children, it must be good!.

We have done some scouting around for excursions and all those you mention are on our TO DO LIST so thank you so much for confirming we are on the right track.

Weather not so good last year then?. I think France in General suffered weatherwise in 07. We dropped really lucky in the Vendee last year apparently. The end of the season was markedly better than earlier so hopefully we%26#39;ll both get some sun and heat this year.

Thanks again for the post.....less than 6 weeks to go for us now and looking at the rain out of my window this afternoon......a sunny (hopefully!) holiday will be just the job!. Hope you and yours have a great time!

Hi there we just got back from Slyvamar last week..was our first Keycamp type holiday and apart from the weather we were very impressed with the site. The pool was lovely and very safe for children with an extremely watchful lifeguard who was excellent. The lazy river is great for drifting down and there are other pools for %26#39;Swimmers%26#39;. The entertainment at night for kids was good..didn%26#39;t use the clubs as only one of our kids was old enough but heard good reports anyway.

Re Speedos we came equipped but my hubby was very relieved when he didn%26#39;t have to wear them, was able to wear standard swim shorts.. I don%26#39;t think they liked bermuda shorts in the pool but did see a few pairs about.

Biarritz was worth a visit and wasn%26#39;t any dearer to park than home... a lovely place and plenty of surfers to watch on the beach.

Avoided the beach at Labenne Ocean due to the undercurrents and the number of times I saw the lifeguards have to bring people in.

If you are keen to hire bikes go out of the campsite and turn right..just over the bridge on the left there is a surf shop which hires at very good rates..especially if you hire for a week or more.. good blkes in excellent condition and cheaper than hiring on site.

Water park next door to the campsite is also good but no shade so mind the sun if you see it!!
