Christmas

We are considering coming to Bordeaux for Christmas. We have not booked yet and are considering apartment or hotels. Can anyone tell me what will be open by way of restaurants etc on Christmas Day/Boxing Day?

The short answer: on Christmas day, precious little; on Boxing Day, much more since the French don%26#39;t really observe the day as much as in the UK. (Of course, in the US it is the busiest day of the retail year.)

Oops, a correction: I just looked at the calendar and see that Christmas Day falls on a Thursday. This means that you%26#39;ll be running into the French practice of %26quot;making the bridge%26quot;. Boxing Day, being a Friday, will bring with it many closed businesses to give the French a four-day weekend.

The even shorter answer: don%26#39;t count on much being open, and if you are interested in a particular restaurant by all means check in advance (web sites, a phone call) to see if it%26#39;ll be open.

Thank you for that - can you recommend any really good hotels that would have restaurants attached or we may need to alter our plans and come after boxing day.

Try the new Grand Hotel. Since they only opened in January (or was it February) they don%26#39;t yet have a Christmas season under their belt so it is hard to say what they%26#39;ll be offering come December.

But what is without doubt is that it is the %26quot;really good%26quot; hotel in Bordeaux, and at least one of their several restaurants will be open on Christmas, perhaps even with a special menu.
