Nice trip - August

I am arriving in Nice in August for a week%26#39;s holiday. We are catching an early flight, arriving around 10am. Can someone please suggest the best way to get to Avenue Gustavin in Nice from the airport? I was thinking about just getting a taxi but would prefer to catch a bus or train if it wouldn%26#39;t be too much hassle?

Also does anyone know if Avenue Gustavin is within walking distance to the promenade, plaza messena? Never visited Nice before so am a complete novice!!

Check the viamichelin.com and/or the mappy.com web sites for maps and walking routes. (BTW, it%26#39;s the Place Massena.)

|||

Do you mean Avenue Gustavin - which is the other side of the port heading towards Mont Boron - or Avenue Gastave V - which is just behind the Prom des Anglais?

|||

Avenue Gustavin, on the other side of the port...

Mmm ... tricky one. I%26#39;m not great on buses in Nice and the location doesn%26#39;t lend itself to easy bus routes.

Forget the train, there isn%26#39;t one. There is a 110 bus which I believe goes from Nice airport to Monaco. If this takes the Basse Corniche route like the 100 does then that might be your best bet, getting off halfway up Boulevard Carnot and walking the rest of the way.

Alternatively, take the 98 into the bus station and change to the 100 Menton or Monaco bus and do the same as above.

As a third option, hopefully someone with greater experience than I will come up with a route that will drop you at your door!

It%26#39;s a bit of a walk to the bars and restaurants of the Old Town but the port will be handy.

|||

I think we may grab a taxi instead, don%26#39;t fancy walking around with suitcases in the blazing heat!

Any chance you would know of a nice restaurant/cafe in the port to have lunch on our first day?

|||

Bus 98 from the airport continues from the bus station to the port during the summer. It is then about a ten minute walk to Avenue Gustavin.

There are so many restaurants to choose from but two worth visiting are Le Lunel, which is right round the other side, and les Pecheurs, also on the quay; it is more up-market and expensive.

Re transport: I don%26#39;t know which bus would get you exactly where you are, but you could get the 98 Express bus to the bus station (Gare Routier) which is 4 Euros; it is a day pass so can be used for more travel.

It is a 15-20 minute walk to your road from there, though you could get a bus (or possibly find a taxi) on from there.

The Promenade, Flower market, Place Messena, are all 5 minutes walk from the bus staion.

Hopefully the Nice experts will check in after the weekend and give you better advice.

Thanks for all the advice, I%26#39;m really looking forward to visting Nice. From your reponses though it sounds like I will be located a 15-20 min walk from the centre of Nice %26amp; Old Town. Does the port also have a good range of bars/restaurants?

Allaboutnice is a wonderful Nice expert who has an apartment at the port.

If you are lucky, she might see your post and offer advice; otherwise you could send her a private message to ask for help.

She has a website with much useful information:

There are oodles of bars and restaurants around the quay and other areas; I drove myself and others mad before our recent trip, worrying where to eat, but much of the pleasure is wandering along, looking at menus and choosing where to stop, so my best advice (though it was a few days before I took it myself)is to chill out and play it by ear.

Look through old posts asking for recommendations and take a list with you so that you can look out for familiar names when you are wandering - many are in tiny streets that you might not walk along without advance knowledge.

Some other restaurant recommendations that come to mind are Chez Davia, La Maison Marie, L%26#39;Ecurie, L%26#39;Escalinda, Achardio, Chez Palmyre, Cafe de Turin; other people will probably add to the list.
