Day trip to Alps from Lyon

My wife and 2 children will be visiting Paris in summer and we would also like to visit the French Alps to view the beautiful mountains. We were told that we could take a train to Lyon and then hire a car for a day trip to the Alps. Does anyone know of a good car hire/ tour service?

BTW.. would this idea be the best way to visit the French alps for a day(Train from Paris to Lyon...stay oevrnight in Lyon and make a day trip to Alps).

thanks

Sparky,

Having driven from Lyon to the alps, I would not say it is the best way to see the alps for one day. If you could take a train from Paris to Bourg St. Maurice, you would be in a better location. From Bourg, you have many choices you can make. Some beautiful mountains are in the ski areas of Les Arc, La Rosiere, Val D%26#39;isere and Tignes.

Lyon is a few hours away from these areas.

Hope this helps.

Again (going on with our thread on Paris forum), as you have only two days, there is no interest at all to make a stopover in Lyon, get directly to the Alps from Paris. I would agree with previous poster if you came in winter, but in summer ski resort are not the best places to discover the Alps in my opinion and Bourg Saint Maurice has no interest except being the access to ski resort in season.

I recommend that you get to Annecy, the old city is amazing, the lake and mountains around are very beautiful, you may enjoy to swim in the lake. You may stay in Annecy, cycle around the lake (beautiful bke paths) or rent a car in Annecy to go and see the Mont-Blanc, it is a short drive (1 hour and 10/15 minutes).

Have a look at the pictures, sure you will love the area:

I wish you had one more day and be able to visit Lyon...but enjoy the French Alps !
