Bayeux -Normandy?

Has anyone done a day-trip to Bayeux from Paris? By train? Is it worth it or should we (2x 70s) do the Normandy tour by bus? Would like to see the tapestry.

Any other interesting/different day trips from Paris?

Read %26quot;Help on Normandy day trip...please%26quot; on this page. There is some good info there that you could probably use.

muffin - You might post this on the Paris site for better responses. We werein Bayeaux last week and loved the Tapestry. Don%26#39;t miss it! We were staying in Caen so Ican%26#39;t help you wiht the issue of %26quot;day trips%26quot;. Good luck on that.

Thank you - mainly we were debating whether to do Bayeux or Normandy beaches - not time for both! As we are from Oz, we have almost decided on Bayeux. For the day.

We just got back from Europe and were able to spend 3 nights in Bayeux. Visiting the WWII sights -extremely moving and a must for my teenage son and husband. I didn%26#39;t think i would be so moved but... turned out it was one of the highlights of All of us.

Do the tour if you can - i can%26#39;t give you advice on which, we had a car and toured ourselves. Don%26#39;t miss the Museum in Caen - an A plus.

Have a grand time

Muffin, as an American who was greatly moved at the beaches (particularly the cemetary at Omaha Beach and Pont du Hoc) and in Ste.-Mere-Eglise, I think the one thing that everyone must see in Normandy is the Bayeux Tapestry. This takes nothing away from the D-Day sites. The Bayeux Tapestry, however, carries the weight of 10 centuries. It is, without exaggeration, one of the great treasures of the world. I do not impress easily, but I am in awe of this object. The film that they show before you see the tapestry is top-notch, but make sure you look carefully at the tapestry.

I wouldn%26#39;t think of a bus trip from Paris in a day. They exist but you have at least 6 hours round trip if the bus isn%26#39;t held up at Paris.

For a day trip from Paris. Versaille, Giverny, Rouen.

One at a time.

I agree with cpmac.

If you can , take an early train to Bayeux, spend 2 nights in town, and return to Paris the 3rd day.

On day 1, visit Bayeux on your own, on day 2, take a tour of the D-Day beaches - there are several outfit in Bayeux, your hotel would direct you to the better ones).

We%26#39;ve twice done a day trip to Bayeux by train. It%26#39;s relatively easy and not much of a strain. I think the first train leaves Gare St. Lazare sometime after 7 AM and arrives in Bayeux shortly after 9 AM, transfer in Caen. The Tapestry is a short walk from the RR station. Rent the inexpensive audio tour for best understanding. Then hook up with one of the half day D-day beaches tours. www.normandy-tours-hotel.com or www.overlordtour.com or www.normandy-landing-tours.com. They will all return you to the RR station in time to get the 6 something train to Paris. We are in high 60%26#39;s and found no physical problems.

Thanks for all of the good advice! we will do the early train and see how we go re the beach tours. glad that I found this site - really helpful and will post a report in September.

Don%26#39;t miss the tapestry Muffin - I%26#39;ve never been all that interested before, but when I actually saw it a couple of weeks ago for the first time it completely blew my mind. The landing beaches and memorials are very moving.
