Rental Car Pickup-Gare Montparnasse?

From postings it appears that Gare Montparnasse would be a convenient pickup point for our rental car, but I want to check with those who know. We are leaving a hotel near the Sorbonne about 9am Mon, and will be driving to Normandy. We will be returning early the next Saturday evening from Chartres to a hotel at Place de la Republique. For obvious reasons I want to avoid driving in Paris as much as possible, so is this location a straight shot out of and into town? I figure we can take the Metro or taxi%26#39;s to and from the hotels. Is this reasonable or are there better choices?

Thanks.

I recommend you select a rental pickup location which is neither a train station or an airport thus avoiding hefty pickup fees. Find an agency office closet to your hotel. Choose a departure route in advance (use mappy.com or viamichelin.com if you have no other map source) and follow it northward. You should have few if any problems exiting Paris. Following a well chosen exit route is not the same as driving around Paris; something tourists should definitely avoid.

Saturday evening should be a simple affair, again find a drop off location close to your hotel. One possibility would be to drop the car off at CDG (there are no airport fees for drop off and these offices are open late) and take the RER B to Gare du Nord, followed by a metro leg to la Republic. This would avoid driving into Paris and trying to find an address for rental car drop off.
