South of France accommodation advice

Hi,

A group of five or six of us are planning a week long holiday in the south of France for the first of September.

This will be the first holiday for all of us in the south of France so we don%26#39;t know the area at all.

Ideally we would want a location that offers a variety of things to do e.g. beach, vineyards, parks, etc.

We will probably rent a car or two so will be reasonably mobile although we would like a fixed accommodation for the week.

Does anyone have any advice as to an ideal area and perhaps even a website that has house/villa rentals?

Thanks very much.

Obvious statement but the south of France is a big area with several contrasting regions stretching from the spanish border in the west to the Italian border in the east.

I am assumong you might be looking more to the Provence/Cote d%26#39;Azur area?

I will limit my comments to Provence but I would also suggest you post in a specific forum if you want detailed advice E.G. Avignon, Nice etc.

Personally I would base myself near Avignon in the Luberon or Aplilles regions.

The Cotes du Rhone vineyards are to the north of Avignon, the Camargue and its long natural beaches are to the south and the Luberon National Park is on your doorstep.

Cars are essential as there is so much to see in this area.

If your budget will run to it try for a House/Gite with a pool as the weather will still be hot in September.

Try Chez Nous (google) for houses etc advertised by their owners - you deal directly with then and they are often English
