Confused about where to stay in Paris

We%26#39;ve never been to Paris, but have a twenty four hour stay the end of Sept. Where is the best part of the city to stay to get a good feel for the people, culture, etc. We love to people watch and relax. Is there a reasonable hotel that you%26#39;d recommend. There are so many at such a broad price range. I%26#39;m totally confused and need help.

Go to www.venere.com - their listings show the location of the hotel, the price and a picture. Many people consider the low postal code numbers to be the best - The last two numbers would be 01 through 060 or 07.

24 hours gives you no time to get a good feel for anything, but especially not the French people and their culture. Their history has been long and complicated. They are not a simple people.

You%26#39;ll just have enough time to see some of the main tourist spots - Notre Dame, the Eiffel Tower, etc. You might want to take a Seine River cruise and see the city from that point of view.

I%26#39;m sure other posters will have some suggestions, I can only say that you should get a guide book and read it. Make a list of the things you absolutely have to see, and come back to the forum for some ideas on how best to organize them to fit them into 24 hours.

If you just want to people watch and relax, walk out of your hotel in what looks like a promising direction and continue until you see a cafe that attracts your attention. Order a carafe of wine, and enjoy.

In only 24 hours, confining your stay to people watching and %26quot;lingering%26quot; is probably the most relaxed plan. (Your profile looks like you%26#39;ve been there before but you say you%26#39;ve never been there?), so you don%26#39;t have to do a mad rush to try and %26quot;see%26quot; things.............

If you want to relax at a cafe %26amp; people watch for an afternoon before a good dinner, then I%26#39;d recommend staying somewhere around the Place St. Michel or Place St. Andre in the 5th/6th/Latin Quarter.

If it%26#39;s only for one night and a %26quot;taste%26quot; of Paris, stay in the Latin Quarter. For only a 24 hour stay, I can%26#39;t recommend going to or seeing one sight over another (except maybe the Eiffel Tower from the Trocadero at Midnight for the light show).

The 7th is too quiet for just a one night stay, the 8th %26amp; 9th I just find too commercial (IMHO). The 2nd %26amp; 3rd are really %26quot;too%26quot; central - if there can be such a thing. But the 4th, 5th %26amp; 6th give me what I consider to be a reasonably authentic %26quot;Parisian%26quot; experience.

Stay in the Latin Quarter, you%26#39;ll have fun for the short time you are there!

I would head straight to the 4th, 5th, or 6th arrondisements and find a hotel near Notre Dame, which is between the Marais and the Latin Quarter/St. Germain. Forget seeing any tourist sights this time and have a great meal, walk around, have a drink at a cafe and soak it all up. A good website for hotels is parisby.com. Bonne chance!

I would agree that the Marais (4th) or nearby would be the best. Close to a metro for the speed and ease of getting to and from attractions you want to see. Camille at 24 Rue des Francs Bourgiois is an excellent restaurant with outside tables and the neighbourhood is nice to walk in. Chartier (7 rue du Fauberg close to Rue Montmartre metro) is an old fashioned reasonably priced dining experience, not sofisticated just fun and it is not far away. Place des Vosges is a great people watching place. A bike tour is a great way to see lots in a short time. Ile St. Louis is also a nice neighbourhood. Don%26#39;t forget to have a view of the Eiffel Tower on the hour of 10p.m. 11p.m. or midnight when it sparkles.

It will be our first time. We realize that 24 hours doesn%26#39;t cut it in terms of seeing the sites. Thanks so much for the suggestions. It really helps to know what part of the city to stay. Based on our objectives, I think the Latin Quarter sounds like the ticket. Thanks again.

Wow 24 hours! Well, at least you%26#39;re going! I am probably the only poster who prefers the Right Bank to the Left. It%26#39;s quieter at night, sure, not as much to do, but I just find it cleaner for one thing, even my kids thought so. Latin Quarter is fun, too, but the closer to the Seine the better.
