Best Towns/Sites to see in Provance

We will be staying in a Villa near Carpentras and will use that as a base of ops. What are the key towns and sights to see for day trips from our Villa. We will be there a week.

You might want to have a look at this thread where I posted my top 11. tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g187212-i675-k2104…

However you should also ask toutou for her tip sheet because Carpentras is north Provence, and she%26#39;s our expert.

I notice you posted in the Aix forum and Aix is some distance from Carpentras in comparison to other large towns like Avignon which is nearer.

As the last post suggests get hold of TouTou%26#39;s Tip Sheet (there is a link on this forum). She lives near Bedoin a small village near Carpentras which is definately worth a visit - on a monday for the local market and a drive up Mont Ventoux in the afternoon.

My advice is to not try and do too much in the week and allow time to explore places you find (we are still finding then after 20 years and we now live part of the year down there).

My suggestions would include:-

Avignon even if you don%26#39;t visit the Palais de Papes it is still a striking city to visit.

The Cotes du Rhone vinyards - there is a clearly marked tourist circuit with good cooperative caves to sample the wine and buy on draught to drink back at your villa. The local pink (sniffily refered to by my neighbour as swimming pool wine) is fantastic chilled.

The Provencial village market. Each village in the area has a market on different days. I have mentioned Bedoin on a Monday others would recommend the Sunday market at la Isle sur la Sorgues. The latter is very popular and Isle is a pretty town but you have to get there early to park.

The chateaux of the Luberon - a pretty drive doing a circuit from Carpentras.

Depending on the time of year you go thr lavender fields around Sault are worth a visit.

Further afiels is Arles and the Camargue - that is a whole day in itself.

Have fun

You don%26#39;t say when you are going to Provence and this makes quite a difference. %26quot;Key towns and sights%26quot; in high season are a mixed blessing.

We have just returned from ten days in Provence and it was getting pretty busy with popular hill-top towns over run with tourists and limited parking. We approached L%26#39;Isle sur-la Sorgue last Wednesday mid-afternoon on the D938 from Carpentras and turned back as the queues approaching the town were horrendous and took an alternative route to our destination.

Our favourite towns (first week in July) were Villeneuve les Avignon, Apt and Lourmarin but on our visit in 2006 the market in Bedoin on a Monday was a highlight, especially to drive over Mont Ventoux
