NYTimes: A New Fashion Catches On in Paris

Actually the full title is: A New Fashion Catches On in Paris: Cheap Bicycle Rentals

Here is the link: nytimes.com/2008/…13paris.html

I know we already had this conversation before Pixfield, but what the NY Times says is not true : %26quot;The Vélib’ program in Paris was conceived by the Socialist mayor, Bertrand Delanoë%26quot;. The first cheap bicycle rental was actually implemented in Lyon first (also a socialist mayor indeed), a new system conceived with JC Decaux called Velov%26#39; (like Vélo for bike and Love), and was copied by Paris 2 years later.

Frankly the %26#39;..new..%26#39; Vèlib system is simply a re-branding of other either free or inexpensive public bicycle systems that%26#39;ve been employed and embraced in a great many European cities for decades. Paris%26#39; Vèlib scheme is a little %26#39;late to the ball%26#39; (though from Parisian press releases, one could be excused if they believed that the French had %26#39;invented%26#39; the concept)....but it%26#39;s still a GREAT idea.
