Trip report - Aix, L'Isle, Les Baux

Day one - we took the TGV from Paris to Avignon, took the shuttle into town, had lunch, and explored a little. We saw the Palais du Pape and the bridge, but really didn%26#39;t have time to explore fully. Avignon is very pretty, though, and I%26#39;d like to devote more time to it on another trip. We then caught the shuttle back to the TGV station, picked up our rental car and drove to favorite B%26amp;B, Les Carmes near L%26#39;Isle sur la Sorgue. Les Carmes was perfection, as always, and that night we enjoyed a stellar meal prepared by the always inventive and truly talented James.

Day two - Ann helped us pick a destination and drew us a map. We elected to go to the Cathedral d%26#39;Images at Les Baux, as they%26#39;ve got an incredible Van Gogh show on for the summer. We%26#39;d already seen the village on a previous trip, so we skipped that and went straight to the caverns. Van Gogh%26#39;s paintings are displayed all over the walls and floor of the cavern, with accompanying music. It is truly magical - like walking through paintings instead of just looking at them. We came back through St. Remy, and had lunch there. The restaurants on the main street seemed overpriced to me (I%26#39;m cheap!), so we veered off down a side street and found a little husband and wife-owned pizza place, where we had the best pizza of our lives. Then it was back to Les Carmes for an afternoon by the pool and a glass of rose%26#39;, followed by another amazing meal.

Day three - We really just wanted to take it easy, so we lazed around Les Carmes until about 2, then went into L%26#39;Isle for a late lunch. We deliberately waited until the market was over, since we%26#39;d seen it before and just wanted a quiet time. The sunday market in L%26#39;Isle is great, though, if you%26#39;ve never done it. We had a wonderful lunch by the river and strolled around the town and along the river for a bit.

Day four - We drove to Nice, turned in our car at the airport, took the shuttle into town, and settled into our new digs for the week to come - see trip report on the Nice forum.

Just found the business card for the pizzeria in St. Remy - it%26#39;s called Lou Grilladou, and is on Impasse Jaume Conte. Nice people, good food.

Okay - obviously I have major jet-lag. I completely left out Aix! We did not drive from Les Carmes to Nice, but stopped off for 2 nights to visit friends in Aix. We%26#39;d spent a month there on a previous trip, so really didn%26#39;t do any of the 1st time tourist stuff on this trip. We just kind of strolled around, enjoyed the ambience, shopped, and had gelato at Amorino on Cours Mirabeau at least once a day (sometimes twice!). The pink grapefruit flavor is my new favorite. If anyone has questions about Aix, just let me know, and I%26#39;ll answer if I can. Sorry about the confusion. I%26#39;ll do better next time...
