Visit to Alps from Paris

My wife and 2 children will be visiting Paris in summer and we would also like to visit the French Alps to view the beautiful mountains. We were told that we could take a train to Lyon and then hire a car for a day trip to the Alps. Does anyone know of a good car hire/ tour service?

BTW.. would this idea be the best way to visit the French alps for a day(Train from Paris to Lyon...stay oevrnight in Lyon and make a day trip to Alps).

thanks

An easier option is to take the train to Annecy. It%26#39;s beautiful and if you take the morning train you%26#39;ll be there just after lunch. (our train took 3hours 42 minutes). It%26#39;s on a pretty lake, and has wonderful views every way you look. Hire a car from there and go up to La Clusaz for example - a winter ski resort.

The beauty of Annecy is it%26#39;s such a compact little town. From the station you can walk to the lake in 10 minutes. There are plenty of nice restaurants and if you want a good clean cheap hotel, I recommend Hotel du Nord (see my review). Avis has car rental from the station.

Have a great trip.

Is there a Lyon Forum on Trip Advisor?

You could message Lyon-Only and ask her that question.

In Sept %26#39;07 I flew to Paris and then took the TGV to Lyon to visit friends. Together we drove from there to Digne, France. On the way back to Lyon by car we drove through the French Alps. We had lunch at a Chalet restaurant sitting outside in the sun looking straight at the mountain peaks covered in snow! It was a memory I will carry with me always!

As I recall, it was a couple of hours drive from Lyon to the French Alps. It is a 4 hour drive from Lyon to Digne.

That%26#39;s the most help I can be. Again, ask Lyon-Only or ask on the Lyon forum if there is one.

If you have only one day, don%26#39;t stop at Lyon, get directly to Annecy. But not sure I would do this as a day trip. Even with a direct TGV (that doesn%26#39;t stop at Lyon), it is a 3 hours and 43 minutes train ride. It all depends how many days you have.

Lyon is definitively worth a visit. So if you have 3 days you could take a morning TGV to Lyon, visit Lyon, spend one night in Lyon. Next morning rent a car there to get to Annecy with a stop at Chambéry. An other night at Annecy, furhter visit the next day and then give the car back at the train station and head back to Paris with the TGV.

If you want further advice, come on Lyon forum (yes there is a Lyon forum, In Love with Paris).

Thank you Only-Lyon. I figured you could help sparky381--and you did. Thanks also for letting me know about the Lyon Forum. Since I have a friend who has lived there her whole life, she is my guide!

Thank you ALL!

I do have 1 night that I can spend. Not sure whether to spend the night in Lyon and or one of the other towns mentioned in this forum.
