Is Giverny worth the trip from Paris?

My daughter and I are returning to Paris after several years. Our main goal is to see the art. We will visit many museums and will travel to Versailles but were wondering if it would be worthwhile to visit Giverny? Any tips on getting there from Paris? Any other art-related tips?

Thanks!

Giverny is well worth it, but go as early in the day as possible to try to avoid the tour bus crowds (you can get there easily by train). We were very lucky in that regard, as we were leaving about the time the big groups arrived (also it had rained hard the night before and we got there just as the storm cleared, and we concluded that not many people had it on their agenda because they thought the weather would be bad). It was really wonderful - was afraid it might be too %26quot;Disney%26quot; but it was like he had just laid down the brushes and gone to the cafe for a glass of wine and would be back any moment. Do go!

Giverny is Monet%26#39;s home, where he planted acres and acres of gardens so he could paint them in various lighting and seasons. There%26#39;s no art there, except a few paintings in the living room of the house (and I believe those are copies) and his astonishing collection of Oriental prints.

It%26#39;s definitely worth the trip to see the gardens and the home (and not at ALL %26quot;Disney%26quot;).

If you are a fan of Monet, right in Paris is the Musee Marmottan which contains an extensive collection of his works (inherited by his son) and those of his many friends. In addition to paintings, there are lots of charcoals, pastels, print ads and cartoons, all by Monet and others by his friends. It%26#39;s an amazing collection in a beautiful mansion, next to the wonderful Parc du Ranelagh in the 16th.

The 16th also has many beautiful Art Nouveau homes and buildings.

Yes, Yes, Yes, Double Yes. Giverny is magic. It is so amazing actually seeing the green Japanese bridge, the water lilies Monet painted, the magnificent gardens, and Monet%26#39;s pink house. I wouldn%26#39;t miss it for anything!

I am not sure when you plan to go to Giverny. You need to make sure you are going no later than early part of September to enjoy the flowers in full bloom. After that, they start to wilt and the garden is not going to be attractive, and they will offer you a discount because of that, claiming frost!

Please go to the Musee Marmottan. I was in tears on my first visit. The Painting that gave Impressionism it%26#39;s name there. Lots of samples of other%26#39;s works beside Monet-morisot,pissaro.

and the walk thru the parc to get there -charming,a carousel w/ brass rings !!

And to complete the Monet vision go to Giverny. Went in Early Oct-there were still things blooming. Just a wonderland!!

You%26#39;re kidding, aren%26#39;t you?

The difference is like this: instead of looking AT a Monet painting, you are IN the painting.

Get there early and avoid the armada of bus tours that arrive shortly after opening.

I agree. Giverny AND Le Musee Marmottan. Both are fantastic. I also cried at the Marmottan. Monet was such a genius. And then to realize that he was going blind. It is just overwhelming.

YES !!! and I would pick Giverny over Versailles.

Make sure you visit Musee Americain on top of Monet%26#39;s house, atelier and gardens.

If you want to see a palace, go to Louvre. Versailles has a lot of %26quot;remodeling%26quot; going on at the moment. Scaffoldings on the outer walls (was there a couple of weeks ago).

For art, make sure you see Orangerie and Picasso museum on top of obvious places.

Giverny is indeed worthwhile! As others have said, be sure to also visit Le Musee Marmottan and L%26#39;Orangerie if you are a Monet fan. As for getting to Giverny, it%26#39;s very easy to get a train from Paris to Vernon from the Gare Saint Lazare. You take the Paris/Rouen/Le Havre line. Once you get to Vernon, there is a shuttle bus that meets every train just outside or, you can walk the pleasant 4 km or so. (We did this to Giverny and took the bus back to the train station.) Here is a link with great directions, including for walking, if you choose to do that: http://www.vernon-visite.org/rgb1/access.htm
