Paris to Reims for one day

We are planning to take the train to Reims for one day and don%26#39;t plan to rent a car. Any suggestions for best things to do that are walkable from the train station or a short taxi ride? We want to go to one or possibly two champagne houses -- trying to find the one I%26#39;ve read about on this forum that has a cavern with drawings (an historic landmark?)-- but as we live an hour from California%26#39;s wine country we are not interested in making a day of winetasting. Any ideas re: sights in the center of town? Is the cathedral within walking distance of the train station? Many thanks . . .

Reims is pretty easy to do visit with a combination of taxis and walking.

The Cathedral is the must-visit apart from Champagne Houses - also fascinating is the Basilique St-Remi (you%26#39;ll need a taxi for this).

As far as the Champagne Houses go, what is fascinating is to visit one which has the famous Gallo-Roman crayères cellars - these are the deep chalk pits originally dug (not for wine but for building) by the Romans - Houses with these include Pommery, Veuve-Clicquot and Ruinart (for the latter you must have an appointment).

Merci, winetravelguides! Sounds like you don%26#39;t recommend one over any of the others? We%26#39;re also wondering if it makes sense to allow time to just walk around -- can%26#39;t seem to find much other info about the town, though have only now started looking.
