Tour de France

Anybody been in Paris the weekend the Tour de France finishes in Paris? I am trying to find out if it is possible to see the race finish, are the crowds so immense we wouldn%26#39;t be able to catch a glimpse? Anybody have any suggestions?

The answer is %26#39;the crowds are immense, but yes, you can catch a glimpse%26#39;. Several people (including me!) who have been in Paris for the final stage have written about their experiences - if you use the search box, just above your post, and enter %26#39;tour de france%26#39;, you%26#39;ll find plenty of ideas.

When does the Tour de France finish in the Champs Elysee? Anyone know the date?

Sunday, July 27.

Just google Tour de France and you%26#39;ll get all the info you need.

I went a couple of years ago and am going again this year. We got to the Champs Elysee a couple of hours before the cyclists did and saved a spot 2 or 3 people back from the rail. We noticed that it was possible to arrive much later and still be able to see the race, especially as some people left after a lap or 2 and you could move up. You could be a fanatic and arrive in the early morning to get a front row seat, but there%26#39;s so much else to do in Paris that why bother?

That Sunday is always a fabulous day to be in Paris. My family always rides bikes around town that morning - especially the Champs Elysees - as it%26#39;s closed to regular traffic. We%26#39;ve got some great pictures of us on the Champs Elysees by ourselves. How often can that happen? Sure, the Champs Elysees is a great place to be, but everyone goes there. We always go to the Pont Concorde (Concorde bridge) that is the bridge between Place de la Concorde and the Assemble Nationale. The bridge has very large pillars that get you up above the crowd. We don%26#39;t have to get there super early and we bring a picnic. Since you%26#39;re in Place de la Concorde you have extended viewing of the riders. We can see them for about 15 seconds both on our side of the square and the other side. If you%26#39;re on the Champs you can only see them about about a millisecond as they go by you so quickly. Of course they make 9 laps through the city so this is repeated over and over. The entire process in Paris takes about 2 hours for the riders to complete the laps.

I%26#39;m considering buying a step ladder, or even a step-stool to watch the race. I saw lots of people standing on stacks of what were supposed to be free magazines.

|||

Maybe a Mardi Gras chair (giant barstool) would do the trick? wonder if IKEA or Conforama carry anything like that?

|||

Does anyone know the approximate time that the riders arrive in Paris. We will be arriving in Paris on the 11-32 TGV from Basel. Hoping to be able to get to our hotel to offload the cases then still have time to see a few laps.

Thanks

Sue

Does anyone know if there is a place to RENT bikes that day. Riding bikes on the Champs Elysees before they arrive sounds like something my husband would absolutely LOVE to do!
