Best base location to tour D-Day beaches

I was planning on staying in Bayeux as a base to do the D-Day sights, but am wondering if there is another town that would be better situated. Also, any suggestions for a nice hotel?? Something ranging 200 - 300 EUR. Thanks.

Bayeux is absolutely fine as a base for the D-Day sites.

Caen is an alternative, but a larger and less attractive town.

Arromanches is a lovely %26#39;seaside%26#39; place if you want to be AT one of the sites - viz Mulberry Harbour!

Bayeux is a superb choice, maybe the best in some ways. I concur on Arromanches also.

That being said, I have stayed in Carentan a few times also. While not as central to all the invasion beaches, it is extremely well placed if your focus is on the American beaches and airborne sites. Bayeux/Arromanches are better in terms of ease of access to British and Canadian beaches, airborne sites, as well as Omaha, etc. but Carentan does have the added plus of being less busy -- a lot less busy in my experience -- than the other places at peak times of the year. Carentan has several hotels of varying price (and quality) and enough restaurants, shops, etc to provide your needs. It%26#39;s worth a look anyhow.

Bayeux is an excellent choice if you want to be in a town - with of choice of restaurants and some nightlife. On the coast, La Chenevriere in Port-en-Bessin is just East of Omaha and pretty fancy. Just between Omaha and Utah, near the Pointe du Hoc you may want to look at Grandcamp-Maisy (www.grandcamp-maisy.com), a small fishing village with a Ranger Museum, a few nice restaurants (La Maree, La Trinquette) and a friendly B%26amp;B just out of town (Le Chateau: http://www.french-guesthouse.com/crans-maisons/14-marion.htm)

Thank you for the help. It looks like I picked the right town, but will still look at the other options.

One more question - is anyone familiar with Chateau de I%26#39;Isle Marie? The last review was less than stellar. I have looked at staying there as well. Thanks.

We%26#39;ve never stayed there, but I can tell you it is rather isloated. Quite a drive to find a bite to eat, and not easy to find your way back at night. But that%26#39;s also part of the charm.

Bayeaux I would say is a better choice than Caen. Caen was about 75% destroyed during the war and doesn%26#39;t really resemble what it looked like during the war. I was at the Normandy beaches this past april. If your time is limited. I%26#39;d skip the peace museum in Caen. It has lots of pictures and small artifacts and films. Not much else.

I think some of the must sees are Omaha beach,

Point du hoc, the batteries at Longues, the mulberry harbor at gold beach and Saint Mere Eglese.

One place I missed and wish I had seen was the Pegasus bridge which is about 5 miles NNW of Caen.

One place that I did go which is about a 100 miles southwest of the Normandy beaches was the armor museum at Saumur. They have about 250 military vehicles on display including tiger, king tiger, panther, sherman, churchill and t34 tanks. You wont see any of those german tanks around Normandy.
