Can anyone advise which is the best ferry service to use from Nice to Calvi? Do we need to book in advance. Travelling on 30th July. Thank you for any advice.

Yes, you will certainly need to book in advance at this time of year. The ferry operator for this route is Corsica Ferries.
If the schedule does not meet your requirements, take a look at the ferries matrix on Corsica Isula%26#39;s travel pages: http://www.corsica-isula.com/ferries.htm. There are ferries from Nice to Bastia, Ajaccio and Ile Rousse - the latter being just twenty minutes or half an hour%26#39;s drive from Calvi.

Last year I went over with Corsica ferries (Italian private company) from Toulon to Bastia and return.
The booking system online is working perfectly. You print your tickets witin a few minutes. We took the night and in fact I was surprised that the ship was really nice for its category. Of course you are not a cruise ship, but it is very honnest.
There is also competiton from SNCM, but they have bad reputation due to strikes. They were stateowned, but i understand they are private now
