Asking for Water

I don%26#39;t drink wine and am more partial to water- now if I ask the following is this correct:

une carafe de l’eau, merci

however how do I say l%26#39;eau is it like l%26#39;ur in its pronounciation?

Thankyou both, would a French person be offended if i said %26#39;Merci%26#39; though- I find it really hard to say %26#39;s%26#39;il vous plait%26#39; for some odd reason :0)

So would that mean water is sounded as l%26#39;O?

If you ask for a carafe, it will be tap water and there is no charge. If you ask for water with or without gas you will be buying a bottle.

if they ask you this, they are trying to %26#39;up sell%26#39; you i.e. get you to buy an expensive bottle of water instead of just bringing a free bottle of tap water

so reemphasize the %26#39;caraffe doh%26#39; (think homer simpson to get the request right)

and you need see vou play --

it is fine of course to buy bottled water if you like but not necessary -- even in rather expensive restaurants we have noticed the locals often with their free water while the tourists are paying many Euros for the bottled stuff

I asked for %26quot;un carafe d%26#39;eau, s%26#39;il vous plait%26quot; nearly every time that we ate out. It should have been %26quot;une carafe%26quot;, but they always understood and obliged. After paying 3 euro for a small bottle of Evian at our first meal, we learned our lesson. This was one of the ways that we saved money during our trip. No one ever asked us if we wanted %26quot;gaz%26quot;, though.

because they know/think most Americans dont want gas AND because the French rarely take water with gas with their food. They drink it before, but not with. Its like having a capuccino after 11 in Italy.
