My parents are planning to visit Nice in August and are looking for ideas for day trips from there. Not interested in overnight stays anywhere else. They will be relying on public transport, either bus or train and any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks,

We just were in Nice and took one day to go to St.Paul de Vence--1 euro each way by bus-- and one day to go to Cannes. We went by train. Other times we have done day trips to San Remo in Italy, and Monaco . A good guide book eg Frommer%26#39;s Provence or France would also have some good ideas.

Eze is good for about 1/2 day. They can then go to Monaco for a couple of hours just to walk around and be back at Nice for dinner.

This is a wonderful area with some many options. This August we%26#39;ll be visiting for the seventh year in succession, but we rent a car for part of the vacation in order to visit places inland.
Here are the %26#39;must see%26#39; places for me:
By train from Nice:
Eastwards: Villefranche, Bealieu sur mer, Monaco, Menton.
Westwards: Cannes.
There are also trains that go into the Alpine regions from Nice, e.g. Train des Pignes between Nice and Digne les bains (90 minutes), train from Nice to Cuneo (Italy)also.
By bus: Cap Ferrat, Antibes, St Paul, Vallbone, Eze, Biot. Haut de Cagnes near Cagnes sur mer is a must see hilltop village.
By boat: St Tropez (book in advance from port in Nice) is a brilliant day journey- 8 am to 7 pm. You can also get a boat to Villefranche, Monaco and Cannes (including Iles des Lerins)- day and evening trips.

Hi
Bus is a euro each way for most location %26amp; train is a few euros more. However, I used only trains %26amp; found it a smarter choice - assured seat, faster travel %26amp; scenic locations. I never took a bus %26amp; hence cant comment but I think train is better anyways.
I used it for my travel to Cannes, Ventimilli %26amp; Monaco. Station was only a few minutes from the sights but it was 10 mins+ for Monaco. However, I was made to understand that bus is a better option for travel to Eze village since train station is much further off from the village. However, I could not cover Eze due to time constraints but hear that it is wonderful.
There is a train day pass for 12 euros which I used for same day travel from Nice to Cannes to Ventimilli to Nice back. It saved me some money.
If you plan to do Ventimilli market (Friday only), pls ensure you reach there by noon since they start winding up / wrapping up by 4 pm.
Cheers!

We just got home from Nice yesterday. Your parents will have an amazing trip. Day trips that we took were:
Villefranche-sur-mer: about 15 minutes on the train. It is a picture postcard beautiful place. From there we went to St. Jean Cap Ferrat to see the Ephrussi-Rothchild Manor.
Another day we went to Monaco- Monte Carlo and Eze in the same day. The train takes you to Monte Carlo- about 20 minutes. One the way back, we went to Eze. Get off at the EZE stop and then a bus for one euro takes you up the mountain to the medieval village of Eze- amazing!
Another day we went to Cannes in the morning and then Antibes in the afternoon. We loved Antibes!
In Nice, of course you have the Old Town, which is great! We climbed up Castle Hill for beautiful views.
